Research needs and interests on biodiversity have drastically increased since the Rio Conference (1992). The main conclusions from the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA, 2001) carried out by the UN and the demonstration of the critical role of biodiversity in maintaining ecosystems services have strengthened research interests on biodiversity. Moreover, the systemic approach generalization, complex system modeling, confluence of thematic prompting new scientific concepts, and multi-scalar multifunctional approach have induced significant changes to the scientific context.
